The diesel engine (also known as a compression-ignition or CI engine), named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which the ignition of the fuel is due to the mechanical compression (adiabatic compression). This Contrast with spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or gas engine (using a gaseous fuel - usually natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas - as opposed to petrol), which uses a spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture. For more on Rudolf's work, you can follow this link to Wikipedia.

They were used at first to replace steam engines, being used in ships since 1910, then on to locomotive, trucks, and heavy equipment. Since the 30's they have been used in cars and really took off in the 70's for on and off road vehicles.
