What makes a diesel, well a diesel?
The diesel engine (also known as a compression-ignition or CI engine), named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to the mechanical compression (adiabatic compression). This contrasts with spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or gas engine (using a gaseous fuel — usually natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas — as opposed to petrol), which uses a spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture. – For more on Rudolf’s work, you can follow this link to Wikipedia. So if there is no spark plug, how is there fire?

Diesel engines uses the compressed air to cause the fuel in the chamber to spontaneously combust. The torque of the engine is controlled by the air to fuel ratio, and it relies on altering the amount of fuel that is injected while using a high air ratio.

They were used at first to replace steam engines, being used in ships since 1910, then on to locomotive, trucks, and heavy equipment. Since the 30’s they have been used in cars and really took off in the 70’s for on and off road vehicles.
What are the most common diesels in the area?
Ford Tough is definitely the Powerstroke engine, while GM is powering on with the Duramax, Dodge’s RAM strength comes from the Cummins.

It’s not just trucks and boats that use diesel engines.
Many cars have been using diesel power to create a strong, fun ride for the driver including: BMW, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lexus, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Saab, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo. “I am so thankful for Mark…”
and his family. We were passing through the area on our way to Roanoke Rapids when our Trailblazer broke down. We are from Pennsylvania and we were stuck almost an hour from our campsite. They went above and beyond for us. They made sure that we made it to our campsite safely and fixed the Trailblazer as quickly as possible to get us back on the road to home. I can’t stop thinking about how well they treated us and the patience, professionalism, and kindness they showed toward us. They are wonderful and I am so grateful for their assistance!
